From incarceration to transformation: Michael "OG Law" Ta'Bon's journey of healing communities
Michael "OG Law" Ta'Bon founded the National Love Team after his own transformation from formerly incarcerated individual to community leader. Born in Philadelphia to blind parents, Ta'Bon served 7.5 years in state prison before being paroled in 2005.
In 2006, one of Philadelphia's deadliest years in decades, Ta'Bon witnessed a child shot to death during a basketball game at a community center. Shaken by this tragedy, he conceived a remembrance in the style of the Vietnam War Memorial and led the painting of the Rest in Peace Memorial Wall at 1924 W Hunting Park Avenue in March 2007.
Ta'Bon painted 406 names of Philadelphians murdered in 2006, some of whom had been his friends. This memorial became the catalyst for his transformation from "XXX Con" (his previous artistic persona) to a community activist fighting hate with love. Personal tragedy struck again in January 2008 when his girlfriend, Chanté Wright, was murdered—likely as retaliation for testifying about a murder she'd witnessed.
